In this day and age, technology is a part of everyday life.  However, it was not always this way.  Over the years different technologies have been introduced to society and have evolved into what we see today.  Many forms of technology have prospered while others have totally disappeared.

Your challenge is to collect information about past, present, and future technologies.  You must explore how these technologies have changed throughout the years and consider what will become of them in the future.

Activity One:

Each of you must watch the movie Forbidden Planet.  While watching the movie each student should complete the Forbidden Planet worksheet.  This can be found on the teacher page.  Be as thorough as possible when completing the worksheet.  Answer each question by creating a list of items that you saw in the movie.

Activity Two:

For activity two, you will be put into groups of about four.  Each group will be responsible for creating a PowerPoint presentation on one type of technology.  After your group has picked a form of technology and has had it approved.  You must research this technology using the internet and books from the library.  Each group is responsible for the following:

1.  When was it invented?

2.  Who invented it?

3.  How has it changed since it was first produced? (Milestone Worksheet found on the teacher page.)

4.  Describe the technology as it exists today.  How is it useful?

5.  Predict what the technology will be like in the year 2050.

6.  If your technology was never invented how would things be different today?

7.  Complete a bibliography for your sources.  You must have at least four sources, one of which must be an internet source.  Only one source may be an encyclopedia.  you must use the library data sheets for your notes and you must hand them in with your presentation!

8.  Prepare a 4 to 6 minute presentation about your technology.  These will be presented to the class.  You will use PowerPoint for your presentation.  All members of your group must participate in the presentation.  Your presentation should include the past history and milestones, present state of the technology and your prediction for the future.

Now that you have taken the time to explore technology, sit back and relax while you watch your classmates present what they have learned.  Remember to be a good audience.

Once everyone has completed their presentations you will be asked to reflect on some of the ideas presented by the groups.  Complete the reflection sheet found on the teacher page.
